Filtration Probe

Filtration Probe - sterile sampling from bioreactors

The TRACE filtration probe is intended for harvesting cell-free filtate from bioreactors and fermenters under sterile conditions.
A tubular microfiltration membrane made of polypropylene, positioned inside the bioreactor, serves as a sterile barrier. The filtration probe is sterilized together with the bioreactor. It is installed in the bioreactor cover port (12 mm with PG13.5 or 19 mm with adapter 19/12 mm) and side port (25 mm).

The cell-free filtrate is sampled continuously or discontinuously at the probe head that is accessible outside the bioreactor. For pumping filtrate, the probe is connected to an external peristaltic pump. For manual sampling conventional single-use syringes can be used.

Advantages

  • Robust, preconfigured membrane tube
  • Low dead volume
  • No sample conditioning necessary
  • Samples are representative
  • Ease of use

Features

  • Sterile filtration; cut off 0,2 µm
  • Especially suited for bioreactors with volumes of 50 liters and higher
  • For cell cultivations and microbial fermentations
  • Ready to use filtration membrane after hydrophilization
  • Robust filtration membrane which can be reused after cleaning
  • Sampling for online analysers MultiTRACE, TRACE C2 Control and ProcessMonitor
  • Applicable for process control via online HPLC
  • Sampling system for external analysers
  • Wihtdrawal of off-line samples in connection with an external pump or manual operation

Technical data

  • Flow rate of 1 to 1.5 ml /min (continuous use)
  • Material: Stainless steel 1.4404
  • Membrane material: Polypropylene
  • Membrane sealing with PTFE ferrules
  • Autoclavable in situ at 125 °C and 1.5 bar
  • Installation in 12 and 19 mm cover ports as well as 25 mm side ports

Variations

With a standard 130 mm membrane length

  • Diameter 25 mm for mounting in a side port
  • Diameter 12 mm for mounting in a cover port

Additional options for the installation of the filtration probe in a side port

  • Membrane protective cage for very large bioreactors with high turbulences and high shear forces to prevent mechanical damage of the membrane holder
  • Shorter version (90 mm length of the membrane) for reactors with limited space between wall and stirrer (reduced filtration capacity!)

Additional options for the installation of the filtration probe in a cover port

  • Extended version (extention 100 mm) for high bioreactors (insertion depth approx. 160 - 330 mm)
  • Extended version (extention 250 mm) for high bioreactors (insertion depth approx. 160 - 480 mm)
